NSW: Fairytale title for former Olympian Cathy Freeman
Champion sprinter CATHY FREEMAN has swapped her running shoes for telling bedtime stories,
continuing her fairytale legacy.
The now-retired Olympic gold medal-winner will be appointed as the official Hans Christian
Andersen Ambassador by Denmark's Prince FREDERIK today in Copenhagen.
The iconic Australian will be the ninth person to earn the title, joining celebrities
such as American actor SUSAN SARANDON and Brazilian soccer legend PELE.
The former Olympian says she's honoured to be given the role and to be associated with
the classic Danish writer, a year out from his 200th anniversary.
Hans Christian Andersen 2005 Foundation secretary general LARS SEEBERG says FREEMAN
was chosen because she's become an important role model for minorities, both in and outside
Australia.
The global project celebrates the Danish fairytale author, who wrote many childrens'
favourites including The Ugly Duckling, The Little Mermaid and The Emperor's New Clothes.
